AT&T Launches IPTV Service in Texas

[News.tmcnet.com] AT&T announced the launch of its new IPTV service on the same day that Verizon Communications, which offers TV service over its fiber-to-the-home network, announced the expansion of its FiOS TV service to seven more communities in Texas. Verizon introduced its FiOS TV in Keller, Texas, in September, and has been adding service in other states, including Virginia and Florida, ever since.

Slingbox: Cool But Set-Up is Challenging

[Mark Evans :: Main Page] After that VON panel we were on, we went for drinks with Jeff Pulver and he told us about sitting in a hotel in Jerusalem and watching a TV show on his laptop through the Slingbox, and then he changed the channel -- and his cellphone rang. It was his wife back home in Long Island, telling him to quit changing the channel, because she was watching through the slingbox upstairs in their house.

Microsoft’s IPTV Chief Leaves

[ paidContent.org] The Microsoft musical-chairs continues: Moshe Lichtman, the man responsible for Microsoft’s IPTV division, has stepped down and will be replaced by Enrique Rodriguez, who comes from the company’s Xbox division. Lichtman is returning to Israel for family reasons but will remain with the company, the company said.

Korean IPTV to use Sun DRM

[bTelevisions - Your Televisions Blog] plans to create a royalty-free, interoperable DRM technology, independent of any specific hardware or operating systems which focuses on the concept of a user being given access to content, rather than one specific device being authenticated. This is something that may come more easily to Sun, since it can rely on the Liberty Alliance initiative which is was also behind, for allowing a single copy of a persons identity to act as a trust source for other services, without having to reveal identities to other services.

Disney to offer free TV shows on the Internet

[bTelevisions - Your Televisions Blog] The two-month trial will involve shows such as Desperate Housewives, Lost, and in the following months, Commander in Chief and Alias, which have cult followings in traditional TV. While Disney already has deals with other online distribution outfits, such as on Apple’s iTunes Store (versions for the iPod video are available for download), the company intends to venture into other revenue and distribution models.

Disney's Web moves could prove AT&T's 'Fast Net' isn't needed

[Paul Kapustka's Blog] Though I don't watch programs like Desperate Housewives or Lost, I was amazed by the usefulness of CBS's web sports moves, both the NCAA plan and this past weekend's Amen Corner Live feature at masters.org, which according to the Masters folks served 1.3 million video streams over the weekend. The latter gave a clear reason why the Web beats broadcast hands-down: When the Masters' schedule was thrown into disarray Saturday due to rain delays, there was no way to find out what was happening Sunday morning via TV, since the planned "broadcast windows" left viewers in the dark until CBS-TV decided it was time for you to know what was going on.

UK’s BSkyB to offer broadband
