[Gizmodo, the Gadget Guide] These are the first pictures of the box, remote control and UI of Vudu, a video store in a box that is going to engage in a battle royale with Apple TV come June. The service will launch with thousands of movies from seven major studios as well as indie distributors, connects directly to your TV and does not require a PC or a cable box.

New IPTV platform for Czech Republic

[Broadband TV News] Speaking exclusively to Broadband TV News at the Czech Association of Competitive Communications (CACC) conference in Prague, Jiri Purs, the owner of Prozeta Broadcasters, said it will start to operate a platform known as Quickmedia with a number of strategic investors and business partners including Sloane Property Park (the operators of one of the biggest fibre optic networks in the country) and Net4Net (formerly known as Transgasnet). Its partners group together a large number of ISPs serving a total of around 700,000 clients.

Comstar reaches 400,000 subscriber

[ Wireless News - Wireless / News] Telecompaper writes…Russian broadband service provider Comstar Direct has reached a total of 400,000 subscribers to its network. The 400,000th subscriber was Irina Terentyeva, a fitness club instructor, who had signed up for the Fest tariff plan with unlimited internet access in the combined sales and service centre of Comstar UTS.

Akimbo Courts PC Users, NHL Fans

[CrunchGear] Later in 2007, the software will allow for burns of Akimbo videos onto recordable DVDs that play on standard DVD players as well as PCs. Also worth noting is that Akimbo is allowing PC users to bypass the monthly Akimbo subscription fee ($9.99 per month) and instead pay per video download.

Motorola ships one million IP set-tops

[Broadband TV News] Motorola has announced the shipment of its one millionth IP set-top box. The unit in question was a VIP1510, the specifications of which are a far cry from the devices that first shipped in May 2001, being part of a range where the specifications include DVR and HD functionality and dual MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 functionality.
