IPTVision > It's Nearly 2010: Where's Cableco IPTV? « The SiliconANGLE
[The SiliconANGLE] Knowing how cable technology works, as I do, and having seen IPTV work in the cases of Verizon FiOS and AT&T UVerse, Im left to wonder why we are still stuck with the antiquated delivery method cable companies choose to shove network and cable programming at us (and why, as a result, were stuck with such low amounts of bandwidth to the home).

[The Gadgetress] Psssst: Digital cable TV is cheaper than analog cable - The ...: Digital is certainly what Time Warner is pushing. One analog channel occupies the same space as about 12 standard digital channels or about 3 HD channels. If the company could convince analog cable subscribers to switch to digital, that would free up a lot of space in the cable going to each customer’s house and allow the company to offer more HD channels and other digital content.

[Digital Society] Digital Society » Blog Archive » Don't outlaw successful business ...: 3458 seem to mirror Google’s concerns. Google is the largest online video distributor on the Internet which puts them at odds with traditional managed delivery television services. While Google says that providing managed IP services and proprietary content like Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) should be permissible, they want the means of providing those managed services to be outlawed. IPTV needs to be prioritized based on where it’s coming from so by prohibiting prioritized data packet delivery based on the ownership or affiliation, it leaves us with some brutally inefficient options. Google and other Net Neutrality proponents justify this by saying that managed services should only be permitted if it does not “diminish” or “poach”
[Jeff Vinson's IPTV Blog] Should MSFT Dump Mediaroom IPTV? « Jeff Vinson's IPTV Blog: IMHO cable TV is like where the phone system was before the Caterfone decision. Except this time the cable ops learned from history and have the best government money can buy to prevent a repeat of opening up (in a truly open sense where anyone can make anything without fear of lawsuits and paying huge $ for licensing) the system to 3rd parties…so we’re all stuck with cable TV equivalent of ugly black rotary phones in the 21st century.
[Telecom News on 4G, Wimax, Carrier Ethernet, IPTV, mobile apps and OSS/BSS | Telecoms Europe] India's tortuous path to 3G | Telecoms Europe: After re-starting the auction process that had been delayed eight months until September, the Department of Telecom (DoT) again had to stall proceedings, with Communications and IT Minister A Raja saying the Defense Ministry had not vacated key 3G spectrum required for the auction scheduled for December 7. The Defense Ministry was to have handed over 20 MHz of spectrum by December, as per a memorandum of understanding signed between the ministries this summer.
[Engadget HD] Cable's fiber to the home plan is well underway -- Engadget HD: If you read the FiOS forum on DSLReports, you will see posts where people have run their own Cat5e from the ONT to where the Actiontec is located. Although the installer will by default run coax, if the Cat5e is there and the installer doesn't have to run it himself, he will generally use it--it just requires a change of the order at the main office to provision you for Internet over Cat5 instead of coax.
[Xlog] Ready or Not, AT&T Sells Uverse: From everything I know from publicly available sources and people close to the Microsoft product, the Uverse deployment is stabilizing (apparently, enought that AT&T feels compelled to begin limited rollouts), however the actual deployed service will have far fewer features than AT&T had hoped for and an order of magnitude fewer features than the Microsoft marketing machine has been pitching for the past 2 years.
[CNET News.com - Business Tech] Clearer picture for IPTV tech? - CNET News: IPTV has been on the cusp of reality for some time, gaining increasing importance as telecommunications companies feel the pinch in their telephony business from Internet-based calling and look to offer a "triple play" of voice, video and Internet services. But after years of talking about offering TV, the telephone companies are starting to invest serious dollars in their IPTV efforts.
[Xenon's World] TV Tax War - Xenon's World: On the other hand, cable companies (and henceforth I will include satellite and IPTV providers under the "cable" umbrella) distribute local TV signals over a much greater range than what could be picked up on an antenna. So cable companies allow local stations to reach a much larger audience than they otherwise would reach.
