[Broadcast Engineering RSS Feed] Why not multicast all of the way down?: Mahmud Noormohamed, Net Insight VP business development North America, says 80 percent of the problems with IPTV implementation could be removed by taking video synchronicity to the local loop. They do need it to offer HD channels, and really the only way they can acquire them and transport them in terms of infrastructure is through MPEG-4.
[[itvt] Bloggit] [itvt] ITV Interview: Siemens vs. Microsoft on IPTV (Part One of ...: All of our set-tops hold seven days of guide data–which is really important if you want to make sure your subscribers always have access to the interactive program guide that lets them find what they want to watch on your service. It’s important because, even if the server that is serving these set-tops needs to be taken offline, or goes offline on its own, or a crucial segment of the operator’s network goes out, there’s still enough intelligence on the set-top to allow subscribers to surf seven days of guide data.
[IPTV News] IP-Based Cable Systems Europe: The transport stream output from the encoder is transmitted on both outputs simultaneously as a multicast packet stream and full N+M encoder redundancy is provided. The dual GigE Encoder output option card also supports splitting of the encoder multi-program transport stream outputs into separate multicasts so for example the EN5930s MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and PIP programs can all be multicast on separate addresses.
[Investor Voices] Broadcast International - First HD at 3 Mbps, now MoTV at 46 kbps ...: Right now they may need 20 Mbps to 25 Mbps, and some analysts have suggested this needs to be higher, up closer to 50 Mbps. But ask a network builder what the difference in price is between a network which offers a native 10 Mbps compared to 25 Mbps - the answer is going to be a substantial amount of Capex less, in the $ billions, but more importantly, even if the network needs to get to those levels one day, it could have meant a slower, steadier build out over double the number of years - which means a better return on capital invested - ask any finance analyst what that might do to a share price.

[In-Stat Research] Digital Video Headends & Distribution Hubs: The Electronic Gold ...: The power of Gigabit Ethernet is that GigE makes it easy for a digital TV service operator to segment its large systems into distinct zones of operation that permit a single headend to provide customized video programming services that have unique programming choices for each zone.
[blog maverick] The Great Internet Video Lie « blog maverick: My Start-up was doing 2 Million in-page video streams a day in 2005 against thousands of pieces of content, our costs were low 5-digits, our move to a CDN was precipitated because it’s harder to scale a thousand videos streamed to a thousand people than one video streamed to a thousand people. Lots of reasons for this (Serving out of cache Hard Drive I/O, NIC I/O etc) but in the end CDN’s came to the table with a more cost effective solution that also increased viewer experience.
[[itvt] Bloggit] [itvt] Interview: Matt Cuson, VP of Marketing, Minerva Networks « itvt: Cuson: Minerva is both a middleware vendor and an application developer. As a middleware vendor, we want a robust community of developers, and we’re working hard to provide a comprehensive platform that makes development easy but also makes application provisioning, deployment and management straightforward and scalable for the operator.
[Blog Maverick] Google Said What about TV on the Internet ? « blog maverick: This is smart on Google’s part because it’ll open up a new revenue stream controlling TV-based advertising without having to shell out big $ for infrastructure to handle TV over the internet (hell, the cable operators will probably pay Google to build their infrastructure). I really don’t understand why everyone is clamoring for net-based TV, aside from the telcos who don’t want to be left out of the party.
[InteractiveTV Today [itvt]] Issue 7.77 Part 2b | April 28, 2008 Subscribe: go to www.itvt.com ...: "Duncan Campbell's background in production, advertising and the development of new opportunities for content providers uniquely enables him to discuss at a variety of corporate levels how ActiveVideo can keep viewers' attention on the television." Added Campbell: "One of the great challenges for programmers today is how to give television viewers the same levels of interactivity and personalization that they find on the Web. The fundamental simplicity of ActiveVideo--Web-based content creation and remote control navigation--enables the rapid development of programming in an environment that encourages viewer interaction." Prior to his stint at Two Way TV, Campbell worked for a year as a consultant to GSN, a channel that pioneered participation TV programming in the US, and spent six years in two executive positions at GoldPocket Interactive, the interactive TV company that was acquired by Tandberg Television in 2006: as its VP of business development, programming and content production, and then as SVP of business development and advertising of its OneMedia division.
[Doctor Decibel & Friends] Doctor Decibel & Friends » Technology Showcase: Video Over IP: The company’s report, titled “U.S. Fibre-based Broadcast Video Transport Services Market” and released in March 2008, stated: “Never before have the terrestrial networks been in as much demand for transporting broadcast video content as they are now, which is largely due to the emergence of Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) backbones and next-generation transport technologies such as the Ethernet. The U.S. broadcast-video transport services market generated revenues worth over $200 million in the year 2007, and the market revenues are expected to exceed $600 million in 2012.”
[blog maverick] Why Do Internet People Think Content People Are Stupid ? - updated ...: The vast majority of broadband internet users already subscribe to a video service, so for most people they would not even notice a change. So it would make absolutely zero sense for legit content providers to compete with the most consistent and largest source of revenue they have. In fact, because the TV Everywhere approach will most likely not only increase the value of cable, telco video and sat video subscriptions, but also increase the value of broadband and mobile internet subscriptions (because of the content and the fact the video can be hosted intra- network and deliver far better quality), TV Everywhere should be a no brainer
