Multicast versus IPTV â Jeremy Visser
[Jeremy Visser] On the plus site, private multicast networks mean it is easier for the ISP to deploy the infrastructure ” it’s much easier to only have to worry about your own network, than also have to worry about interfacing with others. But it also means less incentive to deploy a public multicast infrastructure, and less incentive for content providers (such as TV networks) to provide their services over multicast themselves.

Why Mobile TV Does Not Use IPTV
[Teleconference Service] Although the current 3G mobile network from AT&T and Verizon does not have IP multicast, however, the next 3G mobile network upgrade from both carriers may include the IP multicast feature. For AT&T Wireless, the next network upgrade will be HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) which supports the MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) feature.

Ruckus patents technique for video over Wi-Fi - Page 1 - Voice ...
[Daily IT Newswire] In 2004, when it was trying to develop wireless LAN gear that could smoothly deliver high-definition TV, the Ruckus engineering team found a problem: Carriers used multicast to deliver IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), and multicast wasn't suited to networks using the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)’s 802.11 protocols, which are standards for wireless LANs.

Why doesn't VMC work with U-Verse? - The Green Button
[The Green Button] While it is true that multicast is indeed TCP/IP and the fundamental operation of multicast is only slightly different than unicast, it is not quite that simple. Even if AT&T were to release the specs for their multicast channel lineup, you would not simply be able to put your media center on your network and attempt to send an igmp join for a specific multicast address.

IPTV | Network | Computing @ UW-Madison
[Doit.wisc.edu] (Dial-up Internet service providers don't support multicast either, but they don't have sufficient bandwidth for television, so the multicast issue is moot in this case.) As a result, IPTV multicast channels will not be available over DSL or cable modems. On-demand programs use unicast technology, so it is possible to view on-demand programs over DSL or cable modem technology if the bandwidth is available (I have tested this on Charter cable modems at home, and it works).

AT&T: ”We support multicast must-carry
[Digital TV Facts: The Latest | The switch to digital television] AT&T supports rules that would give cable channel slots to local digital TV multicast services, according to a senior executive: “Were more than happy to put this programming on our network,” Robert Quinn, senior vice president for federal regulatory affairs at AT&T, said in a telephone interview. “We support multicast must-carry.” Quinns remarks in a Reuters interview on Tuesday would appear to contradict an FCC filing from the company last week, reported in Multichannel News: “It is AT&Ts belief that decisions affecting carriage of programming offered by local commercial broadcast stations should be subject to commercial discussions between content owners and video providers,” the company said in a June 9 Federal Communications Commission filing, adding that such discussions were taking place.

AT&T raps multicast must-carry
[Digital TV Facts: The Latest | The switch to digital television] Designing the network to accommodate shifting digital-TV signal formats would cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” per programming stream, AT&T said, adding that the FCC needed to take those costs into account as the agency “considers ways to increase video choice for consumers.”

Cable TV is trying to figure out the new campus model
[connect.educause.edu | Technology In Academia -- Connect @ EDUCAUSE] We are moving forward with new video distribution services and the technology price has dropped dramatically since we began the process.
