[Grand/MEDIA, Inc.] New Issue of InteractiveTV Today: [itvt] Issue 6.27 Part 1: According to the company, zBand 5.0, as the new version is designated, offers direct movie downloads (it allows end-users to request downloads directly from the video headend, creating a downloading queue and enabling them to request more personalized titles, rather than having access only to content stored on their set-top box), intelligent home caching (the company says that new capabilities on the zBand client allow providers to keep a larger library of movies that is easier to refresh and update with new content; the cache may be stored on an end-user's PC or set-top), improved Internet security (the company says that the new version of zBand uses the Internet as a secure backchannel, making the software more Internet- and firewall-friendly, making it easier and less expensive to deploy VOD, and alleviating concerns about piracy and unauthorized access), and a new XML interface (the company says that an extended API for servers makes the XML standard available over HTTP and secure HTTP, thus making the zBand system easier and more intuitive for service providers to customize).
