IPTVision > Uncovering ”˜The Venice Project’

http://www.profy.com [Profy.Com - Web 2.0 multi-author blog] Some months ago I caught wind of a tightly locked venture called The Venice Project, spearheaded by the individuals responsible for unleashing the most downloaded P2P file-sharing software, Kazaa, in the world, and giving millions the opportunity to snub the world’s phone companies, offering free VOIP to anyone with a PC-compatible microphone and a broadband connection. Janus Friis, Niklas Zennstrom and gang even gave Skype users in the US and Canada free calling to mobile and land-line phone subscribers for most of 2006 to up their user base to fend off angry corporate entities.

E-Commerce Law: The plan would appear to mesh well with MySpace’s plans to develop technology that will help block convicted sex offenders from using the site. MySpace worked with the Virginia attorney general on the proposal, which may be presented to legislators early next year, and has lobbied other state and federal officials to create similar e-mail registries. The Equity Kicker: Zennstrom and Friis have fantastic pedigree across two really successful companies and I’m sure what I’m about to say won’t be news to them.  To me P2P delivery is interesting, but the really exciting play is in the service level, and a few things seem to be missing.  At this stage I should say that I haven’t participated in the beta - so anyone who has direct experience of the service (and can share) please chip in.  And if anyone wants to invite me….. This is a very crowded space and it is going to get even more crowded as new 3G and other wireless broadband devices start to hit the market in 2007.
