IPTVision > Why Mobile TV Does Not Use IPTV | IPTV Answers

[IPTV Answers] Although the current 3G mobile network from AT&T and Verizon does not have IP multicast, however, the next 3G mobile network upgrade from both carriers may include the IP multicast feature. For AT&T Wireless, the next network upgrade will be HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) which supports the MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) feature.

Then a Handover Commit Request message is sent, and after the candidate network has made its final commitment for the handover (and the appropriate resources are reserved successfully), the mobile node establishes a Layer 2 connection with the PoA in the area of the candidate PoS, that is, the 3G-PoS in our example case.

[Reinventing the Internet] Reinventing the Internet » The case for making multicast a first ...: However, I’m not sure that we could reach a point where people would necessary accept paying more for something such as multicast that’s already part of the Internet architecture, rather than accepting the less-dynamic workarounds that exist now. It seems to me as if it’d be somewhat difficult to exactly figure out how to get ISPs to implement it in a manner that would be acceptable to both consumers and themselves.

It’s important because, even if the server that is serving these set-tops needs to be taken offline, or goes offline on its own, or a crucial segment of the operator’s network goes out, there’s still enough intelligence on the set-top to allow subscribers to surf seven days of guide data.

[Lion's Links] » The End is Near, but is IPv6? · Security to the Core | Arbor ...: There is, however, something that we all can do which doesn’t take a lot of effort, provides some practical experience, and aids others in the transition: IPv6 enable your public-facing services (such as web sites and mail servers). You’ll note that the public websites of both ServerVault (my day job) and ARIN (my preoccupation) have IPv6 addresses, and it really isn’t that hard.

[I, Cringely] I, Cringely » Blog Archive » The Future of Television (part II ...: Here’s an example.  My primary Internet connection is an 8 megabit-per-second business cable line with a service level agreement and static IP addresses.  I pay more than you do but then I get more, too, though even my service is crap compared to what you can get in Japan, Korea, and much of Europe.  My primary computer WAS a Mac Pro G5/1.6 circa 2004.  I should have replaced the G5 a couple years ago, I know, but my kids are in private schools and I keep buying airplane parts. I finally replaced the G5 last week, though, with a dual-core Mac Mini 2.0.  Both the old and new computers had four gigs of RAM.  Though my Internet connection can easily carry one or more 1080p H.264 video streams, there is no way that old G5 (which cost me $1999 in 2004 dollars) could play it.  It didn’t do much better with 720p for that matter.  But the $750 Mini (small drive but lots of RAM) can easily decode 1080p.

[Physics Forums] Streaming video, how does it work?: For streaming applications, the sending computer (server) does not need to send data to its clients at the fastest speed the network will support -- this is wasteful. Instead, the server can send data only as fast as is necessary to prevent the client from running out of data and having to stumble (drop frames) and make the video look choppy.

[Blog Maverick] Broadband Video is overrated too ! « blog maverick: This way all the decision making and/or Programming of the live stream is delivered using IP/Broadband, but when it comes to the content or actual TV Program, that is delivered using the existing techniques (Cable/Dish). The PC takes both streams from IP and Cable/Dish, and mixes them and allow a TIVO like environment.
